India Resume vs US Resume: Key Differences (2026)

What is the difference between an Indian resume and a US resume?

The biggest difference is personal information. Indian resumes sometimes carry a photo, date of birth or father's name, but US employers discard resumes that reveal these details because of anti-discrimination law. US resumes list only name and contact info, run one page, use US English spelling, and mirror keywords from the job posting.

The differences that actually get applications rejected

Photo and personal details. Indian resumes only need a photo for government or PSU roles, and MNCs and IT companies expect none. In the US a photo is never acceptable, and most employers reject resumes that include one. Anti-discrimination law means anything revealing age, nationality or marital status gets an application discarded, so strip your date of birth and father's name entirely.

Fresher format and CGPA. Indian freshers lead with education and projects, and list CGPA when it is 7.0 or higher. That education-first structure also works for entry-level US applications, but write your CGPA with its scale, for example 8.2/10, because US recruiters will not assume a 10-point system. In the GlobeResume builder, the 'I'm a fresher' toggle reorders your resume to lead with education and relabels the summary as a Career Objective.

Length and language. Both markets prefer one page, though India accepts two pages for experienced candidates and the US accepts two once you have five or more years of experience. For US applications, switch to US English spelling: color, organization, program. Indian English spellings such as 'organisation' can miss exact-match ATS keywords and read as typos to American recruiters.

ATS keyword screening. Keyword screening matters in both countries. Naukri, LinkedIn and MNC portals in India all filter by keywords, and in the US the ATS is critical: mirror the exact wording of the job posting. A resume that describes your experience in your own words instead of the posting's terms often gets filtered out before a human reads it.

India vs United States FAQ

Do I need a photo on my resume for US jobs?
No. Most US employers reject resumes that include a photo, because it reveals characteristics they are not allowed to consider. In India a photo is only required for government and PSU applications, so leave it off for private-sector roles in either country.
Should I put my CGPA on a US resume?
As a fresher, yes, if it is strong. Indian convention is to list CGPA at 7.0 or above, and that is a sensible bar for US applications too. Always show the scale, for example 8.4/10, so American recruiters do not misread it against a 4-point GPA.
How long should my resume be for US applications?
One page is the standard, and two pages are fine once you have five or more years of experience. That is close to Indian practice, where freshers use one page and experienced professionals use two. If you need to trim, cut personal details and old coursework before you cut achievements.
How do I convert my resume between the two formats?
Enter your details once in the free GlobeResume builder, then switch the country from India to United States and the resume re-formats instantly. No signup is required, and the fresher toggle handles education-first ordering automatically. Paid tiers simply remove the watermark.
