Canada Resume vs US Resume: Key Differences (2026)

What is the difference between a Canadian resume and a US resume?

Despite looking nearly identical, the two formats split on language: many Québec employers expect a resume in French, something a US application never requires. Canada also tolerates two pages more readily and uses Canadian spelling (behaviour, centre). The US pushes one page, US spelling, and zero personal details beyond name and contact.

The differences that actually get applications rejected

Spelling gives you away. Canada uses Canadian English (behaviour, centre) while the US uses US English (color, organization). A resume in the wrong variant instantly reads as borrowed from across the border, and recruiters notice. If you are applying in Québec, prepare a French version as well, since many employers there expect a CV en français.

Length tolerance. US recruiters expect one page, with two pages acceptable only once you have five or more years of experience. Canada is more relaxed: one to two pages is normal, and two is accepted for senior roles. A padded two-page resume from a junior candidate is one of the fastest ways to get skimmed past in the US.

Photo and personal data. Neither country wants a photo; most US employers reject resumes with photos outright, and in Canada a photo raises discrimination concerns. The US goes further: nothing personal beyond your name and contact details, because employers discard resumes revealing protected characteristics rather than risk a discrimination claim. Canada allows city and province, but never a full address or date of birth.

ATS keyword matching. Applicant tracking systems screen resumes in both countries before a human ever reads them. In the US this is critical, so mirror the exact keywords from the job posting; in Canada ATS use is widespread and keyword matching is just as expected. A resume that describes the right experience in the wrong words gets filtered out automatically.

Canada vs United States FAQ

Can I use the same resume in Canada and the United States?
Almost. The overall structure, the date format (Mar 2020 – Present) and the no-photo rule are identical, so a strong resume for one country is close to done for the other. You still need to switch the spelling variant, tighten to one page for the US, and trim location details to what each side expects.
Do I need a French resume for jobs in Quebec?
Yes, prepare one. Many Québec employers expect a CV en français, so applying only in English puts you at a real disadvantage there. For the rest of Canada, an English resume is the norm.
Why do US resumes leave out so much personal information?
US anti-discrimination law makes employers cautious, so many discard resumes that reveal protected characteristics such as age, nationality or marital status rather than risk a claim. In practice, anything beyond your name and contact details actively hurts you. Canada follows the same instinct in a softer form: city and province are fine, but no full address, date of birth or photo.
